Get to know 2 project schools from Ghent

Be inspired by the activities of two schools in Ghent, which introduce themselves in a short video.

Ghent is a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is one of the first European cities to launch its own urban food policy. Launched in 2013, Ghent’s urban food policy ‘Ghent en Garde’ demonstrates the potential to transform the food systems at the local urban level. The second strategic objective from the food policy is ‘sustainable food for everyone’. The SchoolFood4Change project is one of the initiatives taken to achieve this objective. The goal is to transform 20 schools in Ghent by implementing the Whole School Food Approach.

School garden and more veggies in school restaurants

The secondary school ‘Don Bosco Zwijnaarde’ is a very big school with more than 1000 students. They have a vegetable garden in the school where students help to plant and harvest vegetables. They learn a lot about biodiversity, working together, the seasons and what to plant and when. The school also serves hot meals during lunch and a group of students wants to make the vegetarian meals more accessible and appealing for everyone.

Vegetable shop and pimp your soup

The primary school ‘De Mozaïek’ started a ‘vegetable shop’ that opens just before a long weekend or a vacation. In the morning the shop opens and parents can go there with their child before school to fill the lunch box with tasty, healthy things like sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, olives or nuts. This is a very valuable moment to get in contact with parents and start a conversation about a healthy lunch box. Next to this action they also have ‘Pimp your soup’ where they foresee extra herbs or cheese or croutons to add to the soup. In that way more children want to taste the soup.
