SchoolFood4Change at the Global Child Nutrition Forum in Osaka, Japan

This December, SchoolFood4Change will be at the Global Child Nutrition Forum taking place 9-12 December in Osaka, Japan!
The 2024 Global Child Nutrition Forum serves as an international platform for government representatives, businesses, and civil society organizations to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and gain insights into promoting high-quality school meal programs.

The forum will spotlight the results of the Global Survey of School Meal Programs alongside other trends, research, and innovations shaping the field. Highlights include sessions showcasing Japan’s expertise in school meal programs and workshops on topics such as incorporating gender perspectives in school feeding, evaluating nutritional quality, and adapting school meal operations for efficiency. Additional sessions will focus on regional program updates, such as the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.

At the end of the four day event, participants will be able to endorse and collect key advocacy messages to guide priorities for the year ahead while supporting the objectives of the School Meals Coalition (SMC) and Nutrition for Growth (N4G). Organized in partnership with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and International Child Nutrition Japan, this forum is a pivotal step towards advancing global school nutrition efforts.

On the 10th of December, Peter Defranceschi, Head of ICLEI’s global CityFood program, will contribute to the plenary session “Regional School Meals Updates” presenting the SchoolFood4Change project and its relevance for advancing school meal programs in Europe. The discussion will delve into the importance of serving sustainable and healthy food in school already at a young age, and how food education can contribute to a holistic school (food) culture, as well as pupil’s long-term wellbeing.
